Introduction:
The House of Krug's unique craftsmanship has revealed a rare Champagne from an exceptional terroir, the Clos du Mesnil. Located in the heart of the village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, one of the most iconic villages for Chardonnay in the Champagne region, this vineyard of 1.84 hectares has been protected by walls since 1698.
Combining outstanding purity and freshness with tension, vivacity and great balance, today Krug Clos du Mesnil 2004 reveals a precise signature and a striking grace.
The House of Krug chooses to create Krug Clos du Mesnil only in years that provide the ideal conditions for the full potential of this walled plot of Chardonnay grapes to be revealed. Protected by stone walls since 1698, the 1.84-hectare Clos du Mesnil vineyard lies in the heart of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, one of the most prized Chardonnay villages in Champagne.
Krug Clos du Mesnil 2004 in Essence:
House of Krug chose to create Krug Clos du Mesnil 2004 because the year 2004 succeeded in offering ideal conditions for the maturation of beautiful grapes, with the promise of revealing the full potential of this walled plot.
Krug Clos du Mesnil 2004 exalts the crisp purity of a single walled plot of vines (clos in French) in the village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, and of a single grape variety - Chardonnay - from a single year, 2004.
After 12 years in Krug's cellars, it reveals a precise signature and a striking grace.
Formats:
12548 bottles (75 cl) and 500 magnums (1,5l) - all individually numbered.
Tasting Notes:
At first sight, a vibrant luminosity and intense golden colour redolent of ripe wheat.
On the nose, expressive aromas of toffee apple, caramel, ripe citrus fruits and lightly toasted nuts.
In the mouth, it opens with astonishing generosity and breadth. Initial hints of brown sugar, candied ginger and pecan give way to notes of citrus fruits as it bursts into an explosion of freshness enhanced by a very long and elegant finish.
Krug Clos du Mesnil 2004 is Unique:
Krug Clos du Mesnil 2004 is the eighteenth Champagne from this unique plot of Chardonnay. The first was created with the harvest of 1979.
The circumstances of 2004 lent the year's grapes a rare beauty, making this year exceptional.
As with all Krug Champagnes, Krug Clos du Mesnil 2004 will continue to gain with the passage of time.
The Year 2004 in the Village of Mesnil-sur-Oger:
The year 2004 called for patience with a crisp winter and chill spring keeping temperatures in Champagne cool for an exceptionally long time. May brought a gentle warmth to the region and in late summer the grapes ripened perfectly in the radiant sunshine.
The beautiful weather from mid-September ensured that 2004 was a generous year following the challenging extremes and small yields of 2003.
The harvest of the Clos du Mesnil took place between 24 and 26 September 2004 and afforded exceptionally characterful yet mature grapes in very good condition.
Food & Wine Pairings:
Krug Clos du Mesnil 2004 pairs beautifully with fish or shellfish dishes such as fillet of flounder in a saffron sauce, zander with beurre blanc, seared scallops or tuna carpaccio.
It may also be enjoyed with delicately flavoured meat dishes such as blanquette de veau.
Grape Variety:
100% Chardonnay grapes from the Clos du Mesnil, a single vineyard covering just 1.84 hectares nestling within the village of Mesnil-sur-Oger in the renowned Côte des Blancs. Enclosed by a stone wall since 1698, the Clos du Mesnil is blessed with an ideal microclimate, being situated on a gentle southeast-facing slope and sheltered from the weather by its wall and the surrounding houses.
Background Information:
Krug Clos du Mesnil is the one exception to the Krug rule of blending, since it is the product, not merely of a single grape variety and a single year, but of a single historic vineyard. In this enchanting champagne, the purity of Chardonnay and the mineral aromas of the terroir are balanced by a discreet yet distinctive taste of honey, which is a particular characteristic of Krug Clos du Mesnil.
The Krugs purchased the Clos du Mesnil in 1971 as part of a total of six hectares of excellent vineyards. However, it was not until after the purchase, when they visited it for the first time, that they realized its full potential. What they found was a beautiful 1.85 hectare vineyard that dated back to 1698, as testified by a plaque on one of its walls.
At the time of the purchase, the Clos du Mesnil had been neglected for some years. The Krugs took the decision to restore the "garden plot" to its former glory by replanting it with Chardonnay vines. The simple solution would have been to replant the whole vineyard at once, but Henri Krug decided to replant the vines in stages, knowing that a champagne has more character when it is made with grapes picked from vines of different ages.
The vineyard was secretly replanted over eight years, and it was not until 1979 that the first harvest was deemed to fulfil expectations. When the wine was tasted, it proved so outstanding that the Krugs decided to bottle it on its own. There would be no "assemblage" - a bold decision amply justified by the exquisite quality of the single ingredient.
